This is the
launch report for a special launch we held for Jay
Kerr's Cub Scout Pack on
July 14, 2001.
It was a very good day. A slight breeze towards the corn. The corn is a mile high. Because the Cub Scouts were is a rush to fly, their flight cards didn't always have complete names, and readable names, so I am not going to list them by name.
| Flier | Flights | Comments |
| Cub Scouts | 39 | They had some very good
flights. Start out with A8-3
motors. This worked great with the
breeze. The rockets landed between the
launch pads and the corn.
Then it was time for the B6-4 motors. The rockets went much higher. We had to angle into the wind a little to keep most of them out of the corn. There were a few recovery problems. Some rockets came down fast while there parachutes drifted to Suffolk. |
| Scott Brown | 1 | I don't think Scott has ever
flown so few rockets.
He put up his Magic on an H128-6. Had a great flight. It is a nice looking rocket. The motor was great for the field. |
| Pete Covell | 4 | Pete hasn't been to our last
two launches. We were glad to see him
today. If you ever want to see some
great looking Estes Star Wars kits, you have
to see Pete's collection.
He put up his Prowler on a C6-3. The Sith Infiltrator flew on a C5-3. His little X-Wing fighter did its first flight on an A10-3. He lost one little piece. The Naboo Cruiser also flew on an A10-3. |
| Jay Kerr | 2 | Jay put up his Mirage two
times on a G80-7. This motor really
pushed the rocket off the pad. He had
great flights.
The recovery was a little tense at times. The chutes really like to take their time opening. Put it didn't go into the corn. Close. |
| Stephen Krall | 1 | Stephen put up his Crayon on
one of the new Aerotech I218-6 Redline
reloads. It had a little trouble
getting of the pad. After that it
boosted really great until...
When the motor ignited it sat on the pad making a little smoke before lift-off. We think the delay charge ignited first. This burned a little before the fuel ignited. We think this caused the delay to be a little short of the 6 seconds. Shortly into the boost the ejection occurred. Talk about a zipper. |
| Gary and Ike Kubit | 9 | Gary brought out his rocket
collection. He figured if he was going
to a launch with the Cub Scouts, he might as
well launch his own rockets.
They went through an assortment of B and C motors. He had a nice assortment of Estes rockets. The Estes SR-1 flew very nice on a B4. The Bandit ripped on a B6-4. The Viking flew well on a B6-4 but then you should have seen it on a C6-4. It really moved out. The Banshee was a great mover on a C6-3. A Thunder Hawk make a couple of flights on a C6-3. His Sky Winder and Bertha also flew on C6-3s. We think Gary will be back. He sort of liked the large rockets. |
| Brian Sayles | 2 | Brian thought he would come a
launch some rockets with SEVRA. He
lucked out in that we were having this
special launch. He hadn't been back to
our web site since we changed our launch
dates.
Brian put up his Big Rage by Quest on a B6-4. Then his Estes Nabu Fighter on a C6-5 Nice looking rockets. We'll see more of Brian at our regular launches. |
| Don Wittenauer | 7 | Don had time to prep a number
of rockets.
The smallest launch of the day was the Saturn five by Quest. This uses a little Micro Max motor. It might of went to 25 feet. He then tested the breeze with an Estes Maverick on an A8-3. Without a parachute it still had good drift. That is when it was decided to shift the Cub Scout to As instead of Bs for their first flight. Old Blue went up on a C6-5 and landed in the corn. Good thing the Cub Scouts were there. The Silver Comet went on a D12-3. The two-stage Estes Vigilante went up on a C6-0 to a C6-5. Ended up lost in the woods. The first flight of a Loc Onyx on a G80T-10 was great. Even with a small reefed chute, with a spill hole, it still drifted. It didn't land in the corn, went past it and past the trees. Did you know that there is a marsh past the tress that are past the corn?? Lost. He then flew a new rocket that is still under construction. The new Aerotech H210 Redline is a great motor. Beautiful red flame. The motor spit out instead of the recovery system. Now it is even more under construction. |
We were very happy that Ken Allen of Performance Hobbies was at our launch again. I was really worried that with the low turn-out that it would discourage him from returning. He will be back. Ken has a good assortment of the things we need to fly at Nike Park. Buying from Ken at the launch saves on shipping.
The next launch is on the schedule. Bring the family. Bring the grill. Have a family outing and picnic.
I want to encourage everyone to join the NAR. Yes, it costs a lot of money. But if gives you insurance. They also have a very good magazine. The NAR also does a lot in getting laws changed. In the past there were states that had banned rockets. Massachusetts had banned rockets right after Robert Goddards first liquid fueled rocket flight. That's why he went to Roswell NM. The NAR was instrumental in getting that law changed. They are now working with TRA in fighting the BATF concerning high power motors.
You have to be a member of NAR to join SEVRA. You cannot fly high power (H motors and above) unless you join NAR.
