This is the
launch report for
November 4, 2001.
It was a good think we had to change the date from Saturday to Sunday. We had a great day. The light breeze that was there when we started, died down to nothing. It was warm.
The turn-out was great. We had a lot of people and some spectators.
The corn was gone.
We had 30 fliers and 114 flights. It was a good day.
A word of concern. We are not doing a good job at picking up after ourselves. You can't leave wadding and spent motor casings on the ground. This is trash and it doesn't look good. There is no excuse for this. It has to stop or we will lose use of the field. Also, I had to go into the corn to get my rocket. I noticed that some people had decided to make a path into the corn by knocking over the corn. We cannot have this. The farmer's crop are important to him. We can't destroy them. If he complains to the park, we will lose use of the field.
| Flier | Flights | Comments |
| Alex Balke | 5 | Alex flew a rocket named
"bye-Bye" on an A10 two
times. The wizard went up once on an
A10.
A rocket named "Heads Up!" flew on a C6 as did his rocket named "Tri-rocket." |
| Stephen Bradford | 5 | Stephen made five flight with "Twister 2." A couple went on B6s. One of those was in a drag race. He made three flights using a C6. |
| Scott Brown | 7 | Scott had a good day.
His "Super Big Bertha" went up on
an E28. A little fin damage on
landing. Those large swept-back fins
are easy to break even on a soft landing.
His "Double Trouble" boosted on a C6 and staged to another C6. The little "Onyx" took off on an F39. "Europa" went up on an H242. He used an altimeter for dual deployment with the main coming out at 500 feet. Good flight. He flew his "Big Bertha" on a C6 in a St. Louis Arch drag race. Fifty-foot streamers attached to the fin. Great sight. Scott has this large flying saucer. The "Flaming Lampshade." He put it up on an I154. Scott has been experiencing ejection problems with this particular rocket. Today was no different. It seems as though every time he flies it, it gets 1/4 inch shorter. His Christmas rocket, "Rudolph" took to the sky on n F50. |
| Daniel Buckalew | 2 | We haven't seen Daniel for a
while. He brought out a new rocket
named "Quick Cure." Named
for the drying time of the glue. The
rocket was built in less than 2 hours before
the launch.
First flight was on an A8. This was followed by a C6. The glue held. |
| Pete and Jordan Covell | 10 | Jordan put up the old "Corn Dawg" on an A8. Then his "Tomahawk" went on a 1/8 A micro motor. Jordan's "Skywinder" flew on a C6. He needs to upscale that rocket. Pete flew his UFO "Area 51" twice on a C6. His "Big Bertha" flew on a C6. The "Bertha Shuttle" was on a C6. Pete has this really long rocket. It is part Big Bertha, part spare parts. It is called, "Long Bertha." It flew on a C6. It was a really great slow flight. Pete likes to take a small rocket with a small motor and launch it with a piston launcher. This is always great. The rocket is "Little Big Ears." The motor is a 1/2A with a 5 second delay. This rocket moves. Real fast off the pad. Great altitude. Pete's "Mini Mars Lander" took off on an A10. Check out The Covell collection at the launches. They do great work on building. |
| Randy Ejma | 4 | Randy had a good day. He
put up his "Strike Eagle" on a
C6. The "Executioner" flew
away on an E9.
His "Initiator" was on an F23. Randy has this really good looking "Phoenix" which he flew on a G80. |
| Eric Fadely | 2 | Eric put up his 5X upscale of
an Estes "Mosquito" on 6, yes 6,
C6s. He had a great flight.
His "Lil Nuke" went to the sky on an F62. |
| Joe and Caleb Hill | 18 | Joe and Caleb had a busy day.
Caleb put up his "Fury" on an A3 and an A10. "Fury 2" went on an A10. "Shark Attack" made two flights on A10s. Caleb's "Nike Smoke" had a big day. Made three flights with C6s. One of those was a drag race. The we moved up to a flight with a D21. His "Aim-97A" went twice on C6s. Once in a drag race. "Jhonny 5" made a couple of flights on C6s with another drag race. Joe put up a "Sizzler" on an A10. His "Apache" left the pad on a C6 and then staged to another C6. Joe's "Io" flew twice. Once on an F24 and then on an F50. His "Lil Nuke" used an F24. |
| Jay Kerr | 2 | Jay put up his
"Mirage" on a G80. He did
this twice.
We have seen this rocket fly many times on G80s. It is time that he runs out of those motors and tries something else. |
| Jeff, Jacob, Joe, and John Koffel | 9 | Joe flew a "Silver
Comet" on a D12. Jacob put up his
"Rattler 7" on a B6 two times.
Jacob flew his "Big Daddy" (no not Jeff) on a D12. John sent his "Masacering" up on a C6. His "Space Shuttle" took to the skies on a C6. The "Ninja" left on an A10. Jeff put up his "Red White Blue II" on a J350. I haven't seen one of those motors in a while. They are really great. This was his Level 2 certification flight. He flew to 2,022 feet for a successful flight. Congratulations Jeff. Jeff also put up his rocket named "Dart." This has a cone instead of fins. Flies real nice. The motor ejected and there was a hard hit on the ground for recovery. |
| Stephen Krall | 2 | Stephen brought out "Ugly
2." Stephen, get some
paint.
He flew it twice. Once on an H112. The second time on an I357. On the second flight he got 3,129 feet. Very nice flight with great two stage recovery. |
| John Martin | 2 | John brought out his green and
yellow rocket named "John
Deere." This is an awesome
looking rocket. It uses five motors.
The first flight was on 5 D12s. They boosted it for a really great flight. The second flight was with 5 E9s. It was the first time on E9s. It is still up there. It landed in the trees. |
| Philip and Daniel Mashburn | 13 | Philip and Daniel had a pretty
good day with 13 flights.
Philip put up his "Mean Machine" on a D12 a couple of times. His rocket named "Push" flew on a G64. Philip's speedy "Onyx" went away on a G64. Daniel is doing with his "Shockwave" what Jay Kerr is doing with his "Miranda." Daniel flew his "Shockwave" seven times on a B6. Seven times. Daniel, try a C6. Daniel's "Gnome" flew twice on 1/2A3s. |
| Wayne Miller | 4 | Wayne had his day cut short
. He had to go elsewhere.
He put his "V-2" up on a D12. His "Red Max" flew on an B4. Wayne's "Norad," a LOC kit, flew on an F22. His "38 Special" fired off on a G64. |
| Dave Muesing | 1 | Dave came to fly today.
He brought his "Proto II."
This flight was using a magnetic apogee detector (MAD). It detects its orientation to the earth's magnetic field and sets off an ejection charge when the rocket goes horizontal. It sounds far-fetched, but it does work. Dave's rocket had a great boost. But, there was a problem with the design of the rocket which allowed the ejection gases to go on the wrong path and escape. The Lawn dart. The MAD worked fine. |
| Tracy Phelps | 2 | Tracy flew his "Super
Nova" on an E15.
Then he broke out, or shall we say "Blew Up," THE DUDE. We are really liking that rocket. Tracy put it up with an E15. |
| Ed Rowe | 2 | Ed came and flew his "PML
Patriot" two time. The first time
was with a G80. That is a good
motor. It is not like Ed to use
something that small.
Ed then put the rocket back together again with an I284. So much for small motors. Great flight. The altimeter worked flawlessly and deployed the main chute at 500 feet. The altitude was 3,236 feet. It was quite good. |
| Jessica and Josh Tschirhart | 9 | Jessica flew her
"Monarch" on a C6. She now
has a "Blorange 2." It is a
larger version of her "Blorange."
For some strange reason, "Blorange"
keeps getting flagged by the spell checker.
"Blorange" flew once on a B6. "Blorange 2" made two flights. Each time on a D12. Her "Razor" went up on a B6. Josh flew his "Big Bertha" on a C6 in the big St. Louis Arch Drag Race. He flew Aerobee 350 on a C6. He then flew it staged. A C6 staging to a C6. Josh has this really great looking "Saturn V." He put it up on an E15. It was a spectacular flight. Staight and slow. You couldn't ask for a better flight. Hey Josh, think about an "F." |
| Shelby, Evan, and Mike Verbeek | 19 | The Verbeek family came ready
to fly rockets.
Shelby flew "Spitfire" on a C6. Her "Rattler" went up on a C6. Shelby's "Quest Rocket 10" went on a C6 also. Evan flew a lot of rockets. He has this really good looking Star Wars rocket. Was ready to fly it, but, Mom hadn't got to the launch yet. He waited. Mom showed up and the rocket went up. Evan flew it twice on C6s. Evan has this rocket with a satellite in it. It is called "Recon." He flew it four times using a B6. Then he put it up on a C6. Evan's "Big Red" flew on a D12 and his "Amraam" went on a C6. "Goliath" went on a C6. Evan put up his LOC "Legacy" on an E30. His "Artillary Rocket" flew on an E9. Mike put up his "Honest John" on a D12. He wasn't to sure about this one. It flew okay, just needed more power. So he put it up again on an E30. Much better. Much better. Mike's "Onyx" flew on an F20. Mike then decided it was time to play with the big boys. A LOC "Mini Magg" on an H238 for a Level 1 certification flight. Everything with great. Mike is now into the high power stuff. Congratulations. |
| Don Wittenauer | 2 | Don put up his LOC EZI-65
named "Remember the Alamo" on an
H97. Nice slow flight. The big
4-ft diameter, red-white-blue, spinning
parachute took a long time to come
down. Good thing there wasn't any
wind.
For the second flight, an I300. It went very high. Would of been nice to have an altimeter. It took forever to come down. Well, it didn't come down all the way. It is hanging in a tree top near the transmission tower to the south. |
Thanks to Scott Brown for "battling" with the FAA. Getting us back in the air took a while for the word to trickle down to everyone in the FAA. But that is okay. We understand. Scott got it squared away for us.
I also encourage everyone to join the NAR. This provides you with a great magazine and that all so important liability insurance. You must be a member of the NAR to be a member of SEVRA. You do not have to be a member of SEVRA to fly. We do encourage you to join SEVRA. We use the money to pay for NAR section dues and to buy launch equipment which isn't cheap.
You have to be a member of NAR to join SEVRA. You cannot fly high power (H motors and above) unless you join NAR.
