This is the launch report for July 7, 2001.
We had 10 fliers accomplish 33 flights. Where was everyone??!! The weather was absolutely great. There wasn't anyone else in the park. A newspaper reporter from Smithfield came to visit again. He took lots of pictures and talked to people. I figure it won't be long and he will be with us flying.
| Flier | Flights | Comments |
| Scott Brown | 13 | Scott had a good day. He
started with an A8-3 in his Estes Gyroc.
His Big Bertha, C-Ya, and Double Trouble
went up on Cs.
Then the Super Big Bertha. Scott really likes this rocket. He has built it a number of times. It went up on a cluster of 6 C6-7s and 1 Dll. It was a great flight. Scott had a couple of E28s to burn. His Onyx flew grrreat on this motor. But you really had to see it when it went up on an F101. What a flight. His RP-1 went up twice on G38s. Bubba went up on a G80. As Scott progressed into the alphabet he put up Magic on an H238. Those blue thunder motors are great. Europa went up on an I161. It went to 2,530 feet. |
| Rich Burck | 1 | Rich put up his Standard Arm on a D12. Very nice flight. |
| Eric Fadely | 2 | Eric put up his LOC Lil' Nuke
on an E15. Those E motors can really
make a rocket fly. You should try one
in an Estes rocket made for Ds.
Eric then brought out a new rocket. Blazin Royal. This is for his level 1 certification flight. He loaded it up with an H128. After safety checks by Scott Brown and Don Wittenauer, Eric was ready for that first step into HIGH POWER ROCKETRY. He had a great flight and recovery. Now he can spend lots of money. Congratulations Eric! |
| Stephen Krall | 1 | Stephen put up a large Crayon
rocket. Yes you can make rockets out
of those Crayon banks you get at Toys R
Us. Spencer Gifts at the mall has some
nice plastic bottles that make great
rockets.
Stephen's Crayon went up on an H123. Had a great flight except that it spit the motor. The rocket recovered safely. A lot of walking failed to produced the motor casing. Those reloadable motor casing are expensive. |
| John Martin | 2 | John came with a new
design. His Nessie's Revenge, painted
in John Deer colors sported five long swept
back fins. Along with the five fins
are places for 5 motors. Ds.
John flew this twice on D12s. Great flights. Something about green rockets and very tall corn. The second time it did land in the corn. Right at the edge. |
| Tracy Phelps | 1 | Tracy brought out his ACME X32. A cluster model. It takes 3 "D" motors. He flew it on 3 D12s. Had a good flight. |
| Mike, Evan, and Shelly Verbeek | 8 | Mike is really getting excited
about rockets. I'm surprised he is not
flying I and J motors yet. He put up
his AIM-120 on 2 D12s. Then the
Initiator on an E16.
His rebuilt Mean Machine flew on an E15. It was going great until it seemed to acquire a target. It went horizontal out over the corn. Then the shock cord separated. He got the nose cone back but the rocket is in a tree. Evan put up his Spitfire, AIM-120, and Firefox on C6s. Then he flew Red Mean on a D12. Great flights.' Shelly put up a rocket with no name on the flight card. It went up on a C6-7. |
| Don Wittenauer | 5 | Don laid off the high power
today. Model rockets only. His
Maverick and Old Blue went on A8-3s.
This was a good check on the wind
conditions. Then the Maverick went way
up on a C6-5.
After some glue dried on a fin, his two stage Vigilante went up on a C6 to a C6. Great flight. Although the fin broke off again on landing. Use epoxy next time. The Maverick went up again on a C6-5. |
We were very happy that Ken Allen of Performance Hobbies was at our launch again. I was really worried that with the low turn-out that it would discourage him from returning. He will be back. Ken has a good assortment of the things we need to fly at Nike Park. Buying from Ken at the launch saves on shipping.
The next launch is on the schedule. Bring the family. Bring the grill. Have a family outing and picnic.
I want to encourage everyone to join the NAR. Yes, it costs a lot of money. But if gives you insurance. They also have a very good magazine. The NAR also does a lot in getting laws changed. In the past there were states that had banned rockets. Massachusetts had banned rockets right after Robert Goddards first liquid fueled rocket flight. That's why he went to Roswell NM. The NAR was instrumental in getting that law changed. They are now working with TRA in fighting the BATF concerning high power motors.
You have to be a member of NAR to join SEVRA. You cannot fly high power (H motors and above) unless you join NAR.
